Box Tunnel Crawl
What you need
- large box
- tape
- blanket
How to do it
- Cut the top and bottom off a large cardboard box and tape the flaps down to make an open tunnel.
- Drape a blanket over one end so your toddler has to push through it to get inside.
- Get down at the other end and call to them, encouraging a crawl the whole way through.
- Turn the tunnel around or add a bend with a second box for a longer route.
- Let them crawl back and forth as many times as they like.
Why it matters
Crawling through a dark, narrow tunnel and pushing through a hanging blanket builds the same body awareness behind climbing stairs or squeezing through a gap. The box came from this week's delivery and flattens straight into the recycling once the tunnel is done.
What they're learning
- Balance
- Crawling through a narrow, dark space asks for steady body awareness.
- Focus & persistence
- Crawling the whole way through, even when it feels close, keeps them on the task.
- Cause and effect
- Pushing through the blanket and reaching daylight the other side is a clear result.
What to look for
Watch for them pausing to feel the blanket before pushing through it, rather than backing straight out.
A tip
Tape every flap down flat and check there is nothing sharp inside before they crawl through.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: leave both ends open with no blanket to push through
Harder: join two boxes together for a longer, bendier tunnel
