Your Plate to Your Place: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Your Plate to Your Place

from 22 months · 5 min · Everyday helper

What you need

  • their own unbreakable plate
  • the table

How to do it

  1. Hand them their own empty plate.
  2. Let them carry it with both hands to the table.
  3. Let them put it down at their place.
  4. Do it again at the next meal.

Why it matters

A plate needs both hands, so carrying one is a step up from a cup and still a job they can do from start to finish.

What they're learning

Two-handed carrying
Both hands together is steadier for something wide.
Getting it there
Walking carefully with something to put down.
Their own place
They know which spot is theirs.

What to look for

Watch for them slowing down as they get near the table.

A tip

Unbreakable plates and cups only, nothing hot, and no knives. Stay with them while they carry.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: hand them a small light plate

Harder: let them carry a plate with some dry food on it
