Match The Socks
What you need
- 6-8 pairs of clean socks
- flat surface like a bed or floor
How to do it
- Tip the socks into one big jumbled pile.
- Pick up one sock and ask 'can you find its friend?'
- Let them search the pile and hold pairs up to compare.
- Ball each matched pair together and stack them up.
Why it matters
Spotting which two things go together is the exact thinking behind matching letters, numbers and patterns at school.
What they're learning
- visual comparison
- checking colour and pattern to find a match trains the close looking that later helps with letter and number recognition.
- problem solving
- searching a messy pile for the right sock builds patience and persistence at a genuinely tricky task.
- fine motor pairing
- balling two socks together works the same finger strength and coordination used for buttons and zips.
What to look for
Rejects a wrong match and keeps searching instead of settling for any sock.
A tip
Use socks with obviously different colours or patterns at first — plain white pairs are too tricky to start with.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: start with just 3 very different-looking pairs
Harder: have them ball the socks together themselves once matched
