Your Own Cup: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Your Own Cup

from 22 months · 5 min · Everyday helper

What you need

  • their own plastic cup, part filled
  • the table

How to do it

  1. Put a little water in their own cup.
  2. Hand it over and let them carry it to the table.
  3. Show them where it goes and let them put it down.
  4. Do the same cup, same spot, every mealtime.

Why it matters

Carrying one thing to one place is a real job they can finish, and it's the same job every meal so it gets easier fast.

What they're learning

Carrying and walking
Holding something steady while moving takes concentration.
A place of their own
Their cup goes in their spot every time.
Helping
It's a real job at a real meal.

What to look for

Watch for them heading for the right spot without being told.

A tip

Unbreakable plates and cups only, nothing hot, and no knives. Stay with them while they carry.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: carry it with you, a hand each

Harder: carry a cup for someone else too
