Yogurt Finger Paint
What you need
- plain yogurt
- food coloring
- tray
How to do it
- Spoon plain yogurt onto the tray and add a drop of food coloring.
- Let your toddler swirl it with fingers and palms.
- Let them taste a little if curious, since it's just yogurt.
Why it matters
Painting with a taste-safe mixture lets curious toddlers explore texture and color with zero worry if it ends up in their mouth.
What they're learning
- Pre-writing marks
- Swirling fingers through yogurt to make lines and circles is a direct precursor to the marks they'll make with a crayon in a year or so.
- Sensory-taste safety
- Being free to taste-test what they're playing with lets naturally mouthy toddlers explore fully without a parent needing to intervene constantly.
- Color association
- Watching colors swirl and blend under their own fingers builds early noticing of how colors mix, well before they can name them.
What to look for
Watch for repeated swirling or circular motions rather than random smearing — that's an early pre-writing pattern forming.
A tip
Strip them down to a nappy first and do it on a highchair tray — this one is unapologetically messy, and yogurt in hair is a lot easier to wash out than it is to explain.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: skip the food coloring and use plain white yogurt
Harder: use two colors side by side and watch them mix
