Wipe The Mirror
What you need
- damp cloth
- low mirror
How to do it
- Kneel your toddler in front of a low mirror.
- Hand them a damp cloth.
- Show a big circular wipe across the glass.
- Let them wipe until it looks clean to them.
Why it matters
Watching their own reflection move while wiping helps them connect cause and effect with their own body.
What they're learning
- Self-recognition
- Watching their own reflection move as they wipe strengthens their sense of 'that's me,' a milestone that also shows up in pretend play and mimicking faces.
- Hand-eye teamwork
- Tracking a smudge with their eyes while their hand chases it builds the same coordination used later to catch a ball.
- Cause & effect
- Seeing a foggy smear turn clear right where they wiped links their action directly to a visible change.
What to look for
Watch for them pausing to look at their reflection mid-wipe and smiling or reacting to it — that's the self-recognition moment.
A tip
Do this one right after bath time when the mirror's already a bit steamy — the smudge shows up better and cleans off easier.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: wipe just the bottom corner of the mirror
Harder: wipe the mirror then a nearby window too
