Shape Sandwiches
What you need
- two slices of bread
- butter or spread
- a table knife
- a cookie cutter
How to do it
- Spread the bread together with a table knife.
- Cut one sandwich into squares and one into triangles, saying each shape.
- Let them press a cookie cutter into another piece to make a circle.
- Name each shape as they pick it up to eat.
Why it matters
A snack gets made anyway, and cutting it into shapes gives them something to name before every bite.
What they're learning
- Shape words
- Square, triangle and circle come up with every piece they eat.
- Spreading
- Pushing a table knife across bread is a real kitchen skill.
- Choosing
- Picking which shape to eat first is their call.
What to look for
Notice them asking for 'the triangle one'.
A tip
Soft bread cuts cleanest with a cutter; save the offcuts for toast.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: cut just squares and triangles and name them
Harder: ask for a square or a triangle and see which one they pick up
