Window View Drawing
What you need
- a sheet of paper on a book or a tray
- crayons
- a chair by a window
How to do it
- Pull a chair up to a window and look out together for a minute. What can you both see?
- Let your child choose three things to draw first, like the sky, a tree and the house opposite, and start with the biggest.
- Count small things as they go in: how many windows on that house, how many birds on the fence, how many clouds.
- Keep watching while they draw, and add anything that comes past: a cat, a bike, a falling leaf.
Why it matters
A window gives them something real to look at and put down on paper, and checking back and forth between the view and the page slows everything down.
What they're learning
- Drawing what they see
- Looking up, then putting it on the page.
- Counting from life
- Four windows on the house, so four in the drawing.
- Noticing change
- Something new comes past the window.
What to look for
Notice them looking up at the window and back down before they add something.
A tip
Pick a window with a bit going on outside, like a garden or a road with trees, and rest the paper on a book so it stays flat on their lap.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: draw just one thing they can see, big, in the middle of the page
Harder: draw the same window view on a different day and compare what has changed
