Family Height Line: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Family Height Line

from 36 months · 10-15 min · Quiet & calm

What you need

  • a long strip of paper, like the back of some wrapping paper
  • tape
  • a crayon

How to do it

  1. Tape the paper strip upright to a door frame, from the floor to as high as you can reach.
  2. Stand each person in the family against it in turn, shoes off, and mark the top of their head with a line and a little drawing of them.
  3. Ask your child to put the family in order from shortest to tallest by pointing at the lines.
  4. Measure a soft toy too, and the cat or dog if you have one, and add their lines.

Why it matters

The whole family stacked up on one strip makes taller and shorter something they can point at, with their own line somewhere among them.

What they're learning

Taller and shorter
Comparing lines on a strip.
Lining up the family
Shortest to tallest.
Measuring
Marking exactly where the top of a head is.

What to look for

Notice them standing on tiptoe to see which line they can reach.

A tip

Keep the strip up for a while, and measure everyone again another day.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: mark just your child and you, and talk about which line is higher

Harder: lay building blocks end to end on the floor to find how many blocks tall the soft toy is
