Whose Nose?: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Whose Nose?

from 12 months · 5 min · Quiet & calm

What you need

  • a grown-up or older child to sit with, or a family photo

How to do it

  1. Sit them on your lap facing another person at home, or hold up a family photo.
  2. Ask 'where's Grandad's nose?' and touch it.
  3. Then 'where's your nose?' and touch theirs.
  4. Go through eyes, ears and mouth for each person.

Why it matters

Finding the same nose on everyone they know joins body words to the people they love.

What they're learning

Body words
Nose, eyes and ears, on lots of different faces.
Family names
Daddy's nose, Grandad's nose, their own nose.
Pointing
Touching the right part when it's named.

What to look for

Watch for them touching their own nose and then yours.

A tip

Gentle hands on faces: show them a soft touch first.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: just noses, yours and theirs

Harder: ask them to touch the nose without you showing them first
