Video Show and Tell
What you need
- a phone or tablet for a video call
- a small toy, drawing or model they want to show
How to do it
- Before you call, ask your child to choose one thing to show grandma, and why they picked it.
- Start the call and let them hold it up to the screen and tell her about it.
- Help them answer her questions: where did it come from, what does it do, what's their favourite bit?
- Ask them to think of a question to ask her back, like what she's been doing today.
Why it matters
Someone on a screen can't see a pointing finger, so the telling has to be in words. A grandparent's questions keep them going.
What they're learning
- Telling about something
- What it is and why they chose it.
- Answering questions
- Thinking about what the listener wants to know.
- Asking back
- A question for the other person too.
What to look for
Notice them saying "because" when they explain why they chose it.
A tip
A short call with one thing to show usually goes better than a long one. Five minutes is plenty.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: you start the telling and they add one thing
Harder: let them show two things and say how they're different
