Treasure Basket Walk
What you need
- a small basket or cloth bag
- a small backpack
- a torch for shady spots
- a small container or scoop
How to do it
- Give your toddler a small basket or backpack to carry.
- Walk together and let them pick up leaves and pine cones that catch their eye. Anything that fits through a toilet roll tube is too small, so leave it on the ground.
- Stop every so often to tip everything out and look at the finds together.
- Head home when the basket's full or their attention wanders.
Why it matters
Carrying and filling a basket while on the move builds balance and grip strength, and gives them the confidence to explore a little further from you.
What they're learning
- balanced carrying
- holding a basket steady while walking is an early version of the coordination behind carrying a full plate or a younger sibling's hand later on.
- focused searching
- scanning the ground for the next leaf or pine cone builds the sustained attention that later helps with spotting details in books and puzzles.
- object naming
- naming each find as it goes in the basket links words to real things, growing their vocabulary faster than pictures alone.
What to look for
Watch for them pausing to inspect a find closely before deciding whether it's a keeper.
A tip
Bring a spare cloth bag for muddy finds so the main basket stays clean for the walk home.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: stay on a flat path and collect just a few items
Harder: add steps, slopes or kerbs to climb while carrying the basket
