Cushion Tower Build: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Cushion Tower Build

from 12 months · 5-10 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • a few cushions or soft pillows
  • a soft toy

How to do it

  1. Stack cushions into a low tower on the floor.
  2. Let your toddler knock it down with a push or kick.
  3. Rebuild together and add the soft toy on top for a wobble.
  4. Repeat as many times as they want.

Why it matters

Stacking and toppling builds arm strength and shows cause and effect in a way that feels like pure fun.

What they're learning

gross motor push
The two-handed shove to topple the tower builds the same arm strength used later for pushing open heavy doors.
cause and effect
Seeing the tower fall the instant they push it teaches that their actions change the world around them.
balance control
Leaning in to knock the tower without falling over themselves is early practice for balance used in running and climbing.

What to look for

Watch for them laughing and immediately asking to rebuild rather than losing interest after one topple.

A tip

Keep the tower low and soft so a topple never startles them.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: use just two cushions for an easy first tumble

Harder: build it taller and add the soft toy as a topper to knock off first
