Sponge Squeeze Splash
What you need
- sponges
- big bowl
- water
- empty tub
How to do it
- Fill one bowl with water, leave the other empty
- Show them how to dunk the sponge and squeeze it out into the empty tub
- Let them go back and forth moving water between the two
- Add a cup to swap things up if they lose interest
Why it matters
Squeezing a sponge hard builds the hand strength they'll need for cutting with scissors and writing later.
What they're learning
- hand strength
- squeezing the sponge works the same muscles used later for scissors and pencil grip
- cause and effect
- seeing water move from full bowl to empty bowl builds early understanding of pouring and transfer
- focus stamina
- repeating the same squeeze-and-pour motion builds the patience needed for longer tasks like getting dressed
What to look for
Watch for them squeezing with two hands instead of just one, showing growing grip strength.
A tip
Do this near a sink or outside — it will get wet no matter what.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use one big bowl and just squeeze in place, no moving between tubs
Harder: time how many squeezes it takes to move all the water across
