Splash Sounds Test
What you need
- a small jug of water
- a saucepan
- a plastic tub
- a cardboard box
- a sponge
How to do it
- Outside, set the saucepan, the tub, the box and the sponge in a row on the ground.
- Let your child pour a little water from the jug onto each one in turn, while you both listen with your eyes shut.
- Ask which was loudest and which was quietest. Pour again to check.
- Then pour fast and then slow onto the same one. Is a trickle quieter than a splash?
Why it matters
The same water makes a different sound on every surface, and shutting their eyes makes it a game of pure listening.
What they're learning
- Loud and quiet
- A clang on the pan, nothing at all on the sponge.
- Listening hard
- Eyes shut, so the ears do the work.
- Testing again
- Pouring twice to check the answer.
What to look for
Notice them pouring slowly on purpose to make it quiet.
A tip
Stay beside them while the water is out, and play on grass or a patio where splashes don't matter. Tip the water away when you finish.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use two things, the pan and the sponge, for loud and quiet
Harder: line them up from quietest to loudest, then guess the sound before each pour
