Bubble Snake Bottle: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Bubble Snake Bottle

from 36 months · 10-15 min · Sensory

What you need

  • an empty plastic bottle
  • an old sock
  • a shallow bowl of water with a squeeze of mild soap

How to do it

  1. Try a few puffs on your hands first, feeling the air go out, so they know this game is only ever blowing.
  2. Dip the sock end into the soapy water and let it drip for a moment.
  3. Blow slowly through the neck of the bottle and watch a foam snake grow out of the sock.
  4. See how long a snake they can make before it flops onto the grass, then dip and go again.

Why it matters

Blow too hard and the foam splutters; blow long and slow and the snake keeps on growing, a lesson in steady breath taught by a bottle.

What they're learning

Blowing out steadily
Long and slow makes the longest snake.
Watching it grow
Bubbles stacking into foam.
Gentle hands
Holding the bottle without squashing it.

What to look for

Notice them taking a deeper breath before trying for a longer snake.

A tip

Blowing only, never sucking: practise on their hand first. Stay beside them the whole time the water is out and tip it away when you finish.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: you blow, and they hold out a hand to catch the snake

Harder: dot food colouring onto the sock and see what colour the snake comes out
