Pumpkin Window Walk
What you need
- coats and shoes for a walk round the block
How to do it
- Set off together past houses with windows and front gardens, and say you're on the lookout for pumpkins.
- Count each pumpkin you see, holding up a finger for each one, and carry on with the other hand after five.
- Look out for other spooky things too: a paper ghost, a bat, a spider's web, and decide which house is the spookiest.
- Stop at the end of the road and ask which pumpkin was the biggest, and which had the funniest face.
Why it matters
A walk with something to count gives every house a reason to look, and pumpkins in windows are easy to spot and fun to compare.
What they're learning
- Counting on fingers
- A finger up for each pumpkin.
- Spotting
- Checking every window as you pass.
- Comparing
- Biggest, smallest, funniest.
What to look for
Notice them stopping at a window to check for pumpkins on their own.
A tip
Look from the path rather than walking into anyone's garden, and hold hands at kerbs.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: count pumpkins on one side of the road only
Harder: count them on the way there and again on the way back, and see if the numbers match
