Soft Ball Roll Bowling: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Soft Ball Roll Bowling

from 14 months · 10-15 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • a soft ball
  • a few large plastic cups

How to do it

  1. Stand a few large plastic cups upright a short distance away.
  2. Show your toddler how to roll a soft ball toward the cups to knock them down.
  3. Let them roll again and again, standing the cups back up each time.
  4. Cheer every roll, whether cups fall or not.

Why it matters

Rolling a ball at a target builds the aim and whole-body coordination toddlers need for ball games later on.

What they're learning

Gross motor aim
Rolling a ball toward a target trains the eye-hand coordination used later in ball sports.
Balance
Crouching and leaning to roll without toppling builds core control and standing balance.
Cause & effect
Watching cups fall after a well-aimed roll reinforces a direct, satisfying action-result link.

What to look for

Watch for them lining up their roll toward the cups rather than rolling randomly — that's aim developing.

A tip

Use only a soft, lightweight ball and large plastic cups so nothing is hard or breakable if it goes astray.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: move the cups closer so nearly every roll knocks one down

Harder: count how many cups fall with each roll
