Sock Pull
What you need
- their socks
How to do it
- Sit your toddler down with their shoes already off.
- Roll the sock down past the heel so it's loose around the toes.
- Say 'pull' and let them take it off from the toe end.
- Hand them the sock to drop in the washing basket.
Why it matters
A sock stuck on the heel is a real fight even for adult fingers, so rolling it past the heel first turns an impossible job into one they can finish on their own.
What they're learning
- Pull strength
- Two hands gripping and pulling in the same direction is more coordinated than it looks.
- Reaching their own feet
- Getting a hand to their own toes while sitting up is a stretch that takes some doing.
- Finishing the job
- The sock coming off in their hand is the bit that makes them want another go.
What to look for
Watch for them having a go at the second sock without the roll-down first.
A tip
Socks come off before shoes go back on, so this one fits neatly into the coming-home routine you already have.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: roll the sock almost all the way off so it's hanging on the toes
Harder: roll it only to the heel and let them work it over
