Chunky Crayon Scribble
What you need
- chunky crayons or markers
- some paper or card
How to do it
- Lay a sheet of paper flat on the table or floor.
- Hand your toddler a chunky crayon and show a few scribbles.
- Let them mark the page however they like.
- Hold up the finished page and admire it together.
Why it matters
Early scribbling teaches little hands to control a tool with purpose, the first step toward writing.
What they're learning
- grip control
- Holding a chunky crayon builds the hand control needed later for writing letters.
- self-expression
- Making their own marks is an early form of expressing ideas before words are ready.
- wrist movement
- Sweeping the crayon across the page develops the wrist motion used in future handwriting.
What to look for
Watch for them looking at the mark they've just made before making another, showing they're connecting hand to page.
A tip
Keep to one crayon at first so it doesn't become a game of dropping and swapping instead of marking.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: tape the paper down so it doesn't slide
Harder: offer two colours and ask them to swap crayons
