Two Little Towers
What you need
- six to eight chunky blocks of the same size, each too big to fit through a toilet roll tube
How to do it
- Sit side by side on the floor with the blocks between you.
- Build a tower of three, counting each block on: "One, two, three."
- Push three blocks over to them and see what they do, counting along with theirs.
- Look at the two towers side by side, then build both again, four high.
Why it matters
Your tower sits right there as a picture of what to build, and the counting gives each block its moment.
What they're learning
- Stacking
- Placing one block squarely on another, three or four high.
- Copying
- Looking at your tower and building one of their own beside it.
- Counting
- Hearing one, two, three as each block goes on.
What to look for
Watch for them glancing across at your tower while they build.
A tip
Blocks of the same size stack most easily. Put any that chip or crack away, so there is nothing small or sharp to come off in their hands.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: build yours two high, and hand their blocks over one at a time
Harder: let them build first and you copy their tower, block for block
