Sock Ghost Throw
What you need
- three or four pairs of white socks, rolled into balls
- a big laundry basket and a small bucket
How to do it
- Roll the white socks into balls: these are the ghosts.
- Set the big basket close and the small bucket further away, and let your child throw the ghosts into each. Which is easier, the big one or the small one?
- Then play catch: you throw a ghost gently, they catch it with both hands and throw it back.
- Count how many ghosts made it home to the basket, then tip them out and go again.
Why it matters
The small bucket is harder to hit than the big basket, and they find out why with every throw. Soft socks make catching safe to try as well.
What they're learning
- Throwing at a target
- Aiming for the big basket, then the small bucket.
- Catching with two hands
- Arms ready, hands open, and squeeze.
- Big and small
- The big basket is easy; the small bucket takes aim.
What to look for
Notice them stepping closer to the small bucket on their own.
A tip
Soft socks can't hurt anyone, so this works indoors. Move anything breakable off low shelves first.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: stand close to the big basket and throw from there
Harder: take one big step back after every ghost that lands in the bucket
