Shaving Foam Swirl
What you need
- shaving foam
- tray
- food colouring
- spoon
How to do it
- Squirt shaving foam onto a tray in a thick layer
- Add a drop or two of food colouring on top
- Let them swirl it in with a spoon or their fingers
- Draw a shape or letter shape in the foam together
Why it matters
Swirling colour into foam lets them watch mixing happen right under their own hands, an early taste of cause and effect.
What they're learning
- colour mixing
- watching colours blend into foam is their first taste of how colours combine, useful later in painting and art
- fine motor swirling
- the circular swirling motion strengthens the wrist and finger control used for later drawing
- sensory exploration
- getting hands into a new squishy texture builds comfort trying unfamiliar things, from foods to playdough
What to look for
Watch for them noticing the colour spread and pointing it out or naming it.
A tip
Keep this one strictly at the table or outside — foam gets everywhere fast.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: skip the colouring and just squish plain foam
Harder: try to mix two colours to make a new one
