Cotton Ball Scoop
What you need
- cotton balls
- bowl
- cup
How to do it
- Fill a bowl with cotton balls.
- Show your toddler how to scoop them into a cup.
- Dump the cup out and start again.
Why it matters
Scooping soft, squishy cotton balls into a cup strengthens the pincer grip toddlers will later use for spoons and crayons.
What they're learning
- Pincer grip
- Picking up soft, light cotton balls between finger and thumb builds the exact grip they'll need for holding a spoon or picking up cereal.
- Hand-eye teamwork
- Aiming a cotton ball into a moving cup trains the same eye-to-hand tracking they'll use later stacking blocks or posting shapes.
- Focus & repetition
- Filling and dumping the cup over and over builds the kind of sustained attention that carries over into sitting through a book or a meal.
What to look for
Watch for them switching from a whole-fist grab to using just two or three fingers as they get more confident — that's the pincer grip clicking into place.
A tip
Start with a wide-mouthed cup so early attempts land a win, then swap in a narrower cup once they've got the hang of it to keep the challenge going.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use bigger pom-poms that are easier to grab
Harder: add a second cup and ask them to fill both evenly
