Round Hole Posting
What you need
- a shoebox with a round hole cut in the lid
- a few big lids from ice cream or butter tubs
How to do it
- Cut a round hole in a shoebox lid, just bigger than your tub lids.
- Show them how a lid drops through the round hole.
- Hand them lids one at a time and say 'round' as each goes in.
- Open the box, tip them out and start again.
Why it matters
A round lid and a round hole are an early match, and the drop into the box is the reward.
What they're learning
- Shape matching
- Round into round is the first fit to find.
- Hand-eye aim
- Lining the lid up with the hole takes looking and steering together.
- Things that come back
- The lid vanishes into the box and comes back when it's opened.
What to look for
Notice them turning a lid to line it up with the hole.
A tip
Use lids bigger than a toddler's mouth, and check them for sharp edges.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: make the hole extra big
Harder: cut a second, square hole and add a block to post
