Scribble Box
What you need
- a large cardboard box, big enough to sit in
- chunky crayons
How to do it
- Open out a big cardboard box and lay it on its side, or cut the flaps off so it's open.
- Sit them inside with a chunky crayon.
- Draw a few lines on the inside walls yourself.
- Let them scribble all over the inside of the box, top to bottom.
Why it matters
A box to sit in with walls to draw on is a cosy little room where every surface is allowed.
What they're learning
- Making marks
- Scribbling on a wall in front of them uses the whole arm.
- Grip
- Holding a chunky crayon in a fist and pressing hard enough to see the line.
- Pretend play
- A box with drawings becomes a house or a car.
What to look for
Notice them turning round to find a clean wall to draw on.
A tip
Choose chunky crayons too big to fit in their mouth and stay close by. A box without staples is best.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: draw on the outside of a small box together
Harder: draw windows and a door, and let them colour them in
