Lid Match Stack
What you need
- plastic containers with lids
- nothing else needed
How to do it
- Gather 3-4 containers and separate the lids.
- Set everything in front of your toddler.
- Show them pressing a lid onto its container.
- Let them try matching and popping lids on and off.
Why it matters
Twisting and pressing lids into place builds the same wrist strength used later for turning door handles and taps.
What they're learning
- Size matching
- Working out which lid fits which container is early visual comparison, the same skill behind matching shoes or sorting laundry later.
- Wrist strength
- Pressing and twisting a lid into place builds the exact wrist strength used later for turning door handles and taps.
- Trial and error
- Trying a lid, having it not fit, and swapping to another teaches them to adjust their approach instead of giving up.
What to look for
Watch for them trying a second lid on the same container after the first one doesn't fit.
A tip
Use containers with clearly different sizes at first — same-size lids all look interchangeable and just cause frustration.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use only containers of very different sizes so matches are obvious
Harder: mix in containers of similar size so they check the fit
