Hold the Banister
What you need
- the stairs at home, with a banister they can reach
How to do it
- Put their hand on the banister or wall rail at the bottom.
- Stand one step below and just behind them.
- Let them climb holding the rail, one foot up and then the other.
- Keep your hands close in case they wobble.
Why it matters
Holding a rail gives them something steady that's always there, so they start to climb with less of your help.
What they're learning
- Using a rail
- Gripping the banister is the support they'll use on stairs everywhere.
- Stepping up
- Lifting one foot then the other, with a steady hand on the rail.
- Leading the climb
- Going first with you behind gives them the job.
What to look for
Watch for their hand going to the rail before their foot goes to the step.
A tip
Stay right beside them on every step and keep the stairs clear. Shut the stair gate again when you're done.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold their other hand as well
Harder: stand a step lower so they lead the way
