Puddle Splash Hunt
What you need
- a pair of wellies or spare shoes
- a small bag
- a towel
- a torch
How to do it
- Head out to a path, garden or hallway with a few shallow puddles or bowls of water.
- Walk the toddler from one puddle to the next, stomping in each.
- Pause to spot leaves or petals floating and scoop them into the bag.
- Dry off with the towel and count how many puddles you found together.
Why it matters
Stomping and balancing through uneven ground builds the leg strength and coordination toddlers need for running and climbing steps confidently.
What they're learning
- balance control
- Stepping around and into puddles trains the ankle and core balance later used for hopping and riding a scooter.
- counting aloud
- Counting puddles as they go builds the number sense used later for counting stairs or toys.
- outdoor confidence
- Getting a bit wet and muddy without fuss builds comfort with messy outdoor play used on future walks and days out.
What to look for
Notice if they start choosing their own path between puddles rather than waiting to be led.
A tip
Old wellies or shoes that can get soaked make this far more relaxing for everyone.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: stick to one or two puddles close to the door
Harder: add a hopping challenge between puddles or a longer loop
