Sticker Steps: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Sticker Steps

from 24 months · 5 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • a sticker for each of the bottom few stairs

How to do it

  1. Put a sticker near the front edge of each of the bottom few stairs.
  2. Hold their hand at the bottom.
  3. Let them step up onto each sticker in turn.
  4. Take the stickers off after, or leave them for tomorrow.

Why it matters

A sticker shows them where to put their foot, so they start judging each step on their way up.

What they're learning

Placing a foot
Aiming for a sticker means looking before they step.
Stepping up
Every sticker is one step climbed.
A goal to reach
The next sticker keeps them going.

What to look for

Watch for them looking down at the next sticker before they lift a foot.

A tip

Stay right beside them on every step and keep the stairs clear. Shut the stair gate again when you're done.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: use just the bottom step

Harder: put a sticker on every other step as far as they want to go
