Pick the Fruit at the Shop
What you need
- a shopping bag
- a shopping list on paper, with pictures
How to do it
- Before you go, draw the fruit you need on the list together, then at the shop let your child read the pictures and lead you to the fruit.
- Give them a choice of two: apples or pears, satsumas or bananas?
- Once they've chosen, ask them to count how many you need into the bag: one for everyone at home.
- Let them carry the bag to the till, put it on the counter, and tick the picture off the list.
Why it matters
Two fruits to choose from, one for each person and a bag to carry: it gives them a real part in the shopping.
What they're learning
- Making a choice
- Apples or pears: theirs to decide.
- Counting the family in
- One fruit into the bag for everyone at home.
- Helping at the shop
- Carrying the bag and handing it over.
What to look for
Notice them counting the people at home on their fingers.
A tip
Pick a quiet time at the shop, and keep their hand in yours or on the trolley in the car park.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: choose one fruit and count three into the bag together
Harder: let them choose two kinds of fruit and count each one
