Pebble Face Family
What you need
- felt-tip pens or paint, and a few smooth, flat stones as big as their palm
- a thin paintbrush
How to do it
- Wash and dry the stones together, and choose one for each person in the family.
- Talk about each face before they draw it: who is this one? What colour are their eyes? Glasses, or a beard?
- The stone is already the head, so they add the eyes, nose, mouth and hair.
- Line the family up on a windowsill and let them introduce each one to you.
Why it matters
Deciding who each stone is, and what that person's face looks like, gives every eye and smile they draw someone behind it.
What they're learning
- Drawing a face
- Eyes, nose and mouth in their places.
- Small careful marks
- On a curved, bumpy surface.
- Thinking about people
- Who's who in the family.
What to look for
Notice them telling you whose face it is before they start drawing.
A tip
Pick stones too big to fit through a toilet roll tube, and lay some newspaper down first.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: you draw the eyes and they add the mouth and hair
Harder: make faces that show feelings: happy, sleepy, cross, surprised
