Feelings Faces
What you need
- a sheet of paper each
- crayons
- a hand mirror
How to do it
- Draw a big circle each on your paper.
- Pull a happy face in the mirror together, then add eyes, a nose and a smiling mouth to your circles.
- Do the same for sad, cross and surprised, taking it in turns to choose the next feeling.
- Ask them to tell you about one of their faces: who it is and why they feel that way.
Why it matters
A circle and a few lines can show a whole feeling, and talking about the faces gives them words for what goes on inside.
What they're learning
- Drawing a face
- A closed circle, then eyes, a nose and a mouth placed inside it.
- Naming feelings
- Happy, sad, cross and surprised, each with a face to match.
- Looking closely
- Checking the mirror to see which way a mouth turns.
What to look for
Notice them changing the mouth on a face to match the feeling they say it has.
A tip
Draw alongside them rather than for them, and keep your faces simple so theirs don't need to look the same.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: draw the circles yourself and let them add the eyes and mouth
Harder: add hair, ears and a body, or draw someone in the family with the face they pull most
