Spider Web Snip
What you need
- a shoe box with the lid off
- strips of paper about as wide as a finger
- masking tape
- two or three toy spiders, each too big to fit through a toilet roll tube
- child's safety scissors with rounded ends
How to do it
- Put the toy spiders in the box and tape paper strips across the top, crisscross, like a web.
- Tell your child the spiders are stuck and need rescuing.
- Let them snip through the strips, one at a time, until a spider can be lifted out.
- Count the spiders as they're rescued, then tape on a new web for another go.
Why it matters
Each strip is one short snip, and a spider waiting at the bottom makes every snip worth it.
What they're learning
- Using scissors
- Open, close, open, close: a snip that goes right through.
- Two hands, two jobs
- One hand holds the box still while the other snips.
- Counting
- One number for each spider that's free.
What to look for
Notice them holding the strip still with their other hand as they snip.
A tip
Sit beside them the whole time and put the scissors away as soon as you finish. Children's safety scissors only.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use thin strips that snip through in one go
Harder: snip each strip into little pieces once it's off the box
