Junk Mail Name Collage: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Junk Mail Name Collage

from 38 months · 10-15 min · Fine motor

What you need

  • a pile of junk mail, catalogues or old magazines
  • child scissors
  • a glue stick and a sheet of paper
  • their name written big by you on a strip of paper

How to do it

  1. Write your child's name big on the strip and put it where they can see it.
  2. Look through the junk mail together for the letters in their name, big or small, and point them out.
  3. Let them snip round each one they find, roughly, leaving a bit of space round the edge.
  4. Stick the letters on the paper in order, using the strip as a guide, with any spare finds round the edge.

Why it matters

Their name is hiding in the post that comes through the door, and snipping each letter out and putting it in order makes it theirs.

What they're learning

Snipping round
Small cuts round a printed letter.
Letters in their name
Knowing which ones belong.
Print all around
Letters on leaflets, envelopes and packets.

What to look for

Notice them spotting a letter from their name before you do.

A tip

Shop leaflets and big headlines have the boldest letters and are the easiest to cut out. Sit beside them while the scissors are out and put them away when you finish. Children's safety scissors only.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: hunt for the first letter of their name only and snip out every one you find

Harder: find the letters for someone else's name in the family too
