Name Sign for the Door: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Name Sign for the Door

from 42 months · 10-15 min · Fine motor

What you need

  • a strip of card or paper
  • crayons
  • a few stickers
  • masking tape

How to do it

  1. Write their name in big, clear letters along the top of the strip, saying each letter as you go.
  2. Let them write their name underneath, or just the first letter, or any marks they like.
  3. Decorate the sign together with stickers and drawings of things they love.
  4. Tape it to their bedroom door and read it out together.

Why it matters

Their own name is the word that matters most to them, and putting it on their door gives the writing a real job.

What they're learning

Writing their name
The first letter of their name is often the first letter they try.
Holding a crayon
Small letters need a steadier grip than big scribbles.
Words have a job
A sign on the door says whose room it is to everyone who walks past.

What to look for

Notice them pointing to the first letter and saying it is theirs, or finding it again somewhere else.

A tip

Write their name with a capital letter first and the rest in small letters, the way they will see it at nursery and school. Any wobbly try counts.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: write their name big in chalk outside, or with a finger in a tray of flour, and let them go over it with their finger

Harder: make a sign for everyone else who lives in the house, with their help on the letters
