Jump The Line
What you need
- masking tape, pressed down hard
- a clear bit of floor space indoors, smooth, dry and not slippery
How to do it
- Press masking tape down hard across a smooth, dry floor, so no edge can catch a toe.
- Stand them in front of the line, then stand still slightly to one side, hands low and soft, only steadying.
- Count "one, two, three, jump!" and let them jump over, cheering wherever they land.
- Step across to the other side for the jump back.
Why it matters
With a line to clear, there is a reason to bend, push off and get both feet up at once, with you close by to steady the landing.
What they're learning
- Two-foot jumping
- Bending, pushing off and landing with both feet together.
- Balance on landing
- Finding their feet again after each jump, with your hands low and ready to steady them.
- Counting to go
- Hearing "one, two, three" come round before every jump.
What to look for
Watch for the knees bending on "two, three", ready for the jump.
A tip
Your hands only steady; the jumping is theirs, so never lift or swing them by the arms, which can pull an elbow out of place. Bare feet or non-slip shoes, and no loose rugs.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: jump in place with no line at all, you standing close by
Harder: add a second line to jump next, with you stepping across each time
