Hallway Crawl Race: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Hallway Crawl Race

from 12 months · 5-10 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • clear hallway or open floor space

How to do it

  1. Clear a straight stretch of hallway or floor.
  2. Get down on all fours next to your toddler.
  3. Race crawling from one end to the other, cheering at the finish.
  4. Repeat a few times, taking turns 'winning'.

Why it matters

Crawling races strengthen core and shoulder muscles while building the crossing-midline movement toddlers need for coordinated walking and running.

What they're learning

Core strength
Crawling builds the trunk stability that underlies steady walking, running, and eventually sitting still to focus.
Cross-body coordination
Moving opposite arm and leg together trains the brain wiring used later for skipping and coordinated sports.
Turn-taking
Racing and cheering for each other's turn is an early, playful introduction to sharing a game.

What to look for

Watch for smooth opposite arm-leg crawling rather than same-side hopping — that's efficient crawling technique.

A tip

Clear the path of any trip hazards first, and keep the floor free of hard toys underfoot.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: crawl a shorter distance with lots of cheering along the way

Harder: add a soft cushion to crawl over partway through
