Jelly Squish Bag: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Jelly Squish Bag

from 12 months · 5-10 min · Sensory

What you need

  • freezer bag
  • hair gel or jelly
  • tape

How to do it

  1. Fill a freezer bag with jelly or hair gel and seal it well
  2. Tape it flat to the table or floor
  3. Let them squish, poke and drag their fingers over it

Why it matters

All the satisfying squish of messy play with nothing that can end up in their mouth — perfect for cautious tummies and tired parents.

What they're learning

Finger isolation
Poking and dragging individual fingers through the gel trains toddlers to move one finger at a time instead of a whole fist, a skill they'll need for pointing and typing later.
Cause & effect
Pressing a shape into the bag and watching it slowly disappear teaches toddlers that their actions on an object are temporary and repeatable.
Sensory tolerance without mess anxiety
Getting the full squish sensation with a sealed barrier lets sensitive toddlers build comfort with messy textures before they're ready for the real thing.

What to look for

Watch for one finger tracing a line or drawing a shape rather than a flat palm press — that's early finger isolation showing up.

A tip

Double-bag it and tape all four edges down hard — a burst bag is the one mess this activity is supposed to avoid, so test the seal by pressing firmly yourself first.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: Tape it to a window at standing height

Harder: Drop a few big buttons inside for them to push around
