One More Bubble
What you need
- a pot of bubbles
How to do it
- Blow one round of bubbles and let your toddler chase and pop them.
- Put the lid back on, hold the pot where they can see it, and wait.
- When they point at it, reach for it or make a sound, say 'more bubbles!' and blow again.
- Keep going for as long as it stays fun.
Why it matters
Bubbles stop unless someone blows them, and that someone is you, so wanting more is a reason to ask, over and over, in a game they'd happily play all afternoon.
What they're learning
- Asking for more
- 'More' is one of the first things any toddler has a reason to say, and pointing says it perfectly well.
- Back and forth
- They ask, you blow, they ask again: the shape of a conversation before there are words in it.
- Tracking and reaching
- Following a bubble across the room and swiping at it is eyes and hands working as a pair.
What to look for
Watch for them turning to you rather than to the bubbles when they run out. That turn is the request starting.
A tip
If the waiting tips over into upset, just blow. This works because they want more, not because they had to earn it.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: hold the wand ready at your lips so the next blow is obviously coming
Harder: wait a little longer before you blow, without saying anything
