Musical Cushions: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Musical Cushions

from 36 months · 10-15 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • four or five big cushions
  • music on a phone or speaker

How to do it

  1. Scatter the cushions round the floor and put the music on.
  2. Dance around the room, and when the music stops, everyone jumps onto a cushion.
  3. Take one cushion away each round. Nobody is out: you all squeeze onto the cushions that are left.
  4. Finish with everyone squashed onto the very last cushion, holding on to each other.

Why it matters

With nobody ever out, each stop turns into a scramble to share a cushion, and the listening game stays giggly to the end.

What they're learning

Listening for the stop
Ears on the music while dancing.
Quick feet
Onto a cushion in a hurry.
Sharing space
Squeezing up to fit everyone.

What to look for

Notice them shuffling over to make room for someone on their cushion.

A tip

Use big floor cushions on a carpet or rug so nothing slides when they jump on, and clear away sharp corners first.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: keep every cushion and simply freeze on one when the music stops

Harder: when the music stops, call a body part to touch the cushion: an elbow, a knee, a nose
