Hide-and-Seek Teams: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Hide-and-Seek Teams

from 40 months · 10-15 min · Gross motor

What you need

  • cushions and a blanket to hide behind

How to do it

  1. Split into two teams: your child and a friend, a cousin or a grown-up in one, everyone else in the other.
  2. One team covers their eyes and counts to ten out loud while the other team finds one hiding place to share.
  3. If the two hiders want different places, they'll need to agree on one, or find a place big enough for both.
  4. Seekers find them, then swap. Let the children make up a new rule each round, like hiding only behind cushions.

Why it matters

Two hiders with one hiding place have to agree before the counting stops, and counting out loud is the rule that keeps it fair.

What they're learning

Agreeing a plan
Two hiders, one hiding place.
Counting to ten
Out loud, eyes covered, all the way to ten.
Taking turns to seek
Hiding, then seeking, then hiding again.

What to look for

Notice them whispering a plan to their teammate.

A tip

Agree before you start that nobody hides behind a closed door, inside a cupboard or anywhere high.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: hide together as one team with you, and let them choose the spot

Harder: add a rule that the seekers have to find everyone before a song ends
