Hello, Kitchen!
What you need
- one thing to point at in each room, like a chair, the window or the fridge
How to do it
- Carry them, or walk slowly together, into one room and say 'Hello, kitchen!'
- Stop at one thing, point to it and say hello: 'Hello, fridge.'
- Wave 'bye bye, kitchen' as you leave, and go on to the next room.
- Visit three or four rooms, then finish where you started.
Why it matters
Every room has a name and its own things in it, and saying hello to each one is a slow, friendly way to learn them.
What they're learning
- Room words
- Kitchen, hallway, living room: the names of the places they live in.
- Hello and bye
- A wave on the way into every room and out again.
- Pointing
- Pointing at the next thing to say hello to.
What to look for
Notice them waving or pointing before you say the name.
A tip
Go slowly and stop at whatever they reach for, not just the things you picked.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: stay in one room and say hello to three things in it
Harder: stop in the hallway, ask 'where's the kitchen?', and let them lead you
