Halloween Window Walk
What you need
- a cup to carry
How to do it
- Give your toddler a cup to carry and set off on a walk round the block together.
- Look out for pumpkins and decorations in windows and front gardens, spotting them from the path rather than walking into anyone's garden.
- Each time you spot one, pick up a fallen leaf and pop it in the cup. No leaves about? Keep a tally on your fingers instead.
- Give a friendly 'boo!' and a wave to the smiley pumpkins and the friendly ghosts.
- At home, wash hands, then tip the leaves out and count how many pumpkins and decorations you found.
Why it matters
Spotting and pointing on a walk keeps their eyes busy and their legs going further than they would on a plain stroll, and the cup of leaves turns what they saw into something to count.
What they're learning
- Walking further
- Having something to look for keeps little legs going on a longer walk.
- Spotting and pointing
- Searching windows for a pumpkin builds the careful looking they use later in picture books and puzzles.
- Counting
- One leaf for each find, then counting the leaves at home, links numbers to things they really saw.
What to look for
Watch for them spotting a pumpkin before you do. Hold hands near roads and driveways.
A tip
Leave any decoration that looks scary out of the count, and walk on past it with a cheery wave.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: walk to the end of your road and back, spotting just a few
Harder: look for pumpkins first, then ghosts, then bats
