Ghost Sheet Peekaboo
What you need
- a light white sheet
How to do it
- Sit on the floor facing your toddler.
- Drape the white sheet over your head and wait a moment.
- Say 'boo' softly, then let them pull the sheet off.
- Smile, say hello and do it again.
Why it matters
Peekaboo with a ghost plays on a big idea for this age, that you are still there under the sheet, and pulling it off themselves puts them in charge of the surprise.
What they're learning
- Object permanence
- Knowing you are still there under the sheet is one of the big ideas of this age, and peekaboo plays with it over and over.
- Anticipation
- Waiting for the 'boo' and laughing when it comes builds their sense of what happens next.
- Connection
- Face-to-face play full of smiles and eye contact is time that tells them you are close.
What to look for
Watch for them reaching for the sheet before you say 'boo'. That is them knowing what comes next.
A tip
Keep the boo soft and peek out straight away if they look unsure. This ghost is a friendly one.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: lift a corner so they can see your face before they pull
Harder: hide behind the sheet held up like a curtain
