Garden Watering Round
What you need
- a small watering can
- a jug of water
- a houseplant or two
- a cloth for spills
How to do it
- Fill a small watering can with water together.
- Walk round the garden or windowsill plants, pouring a little on each one.
- Let them pat the soil and check the leaves after watering.
- Wipe up any spills together with a cloth.
Why it matters
Matching a careful pour to each plant builds steady hand control and gives them an early, real sense of looking after something else.
What they're learning
- controlled pouring
- tipping a can just enough for each plant builds the same wrist control they'll later use pouring their own drink.
- caring routine
- watering the same plants each time plants an early sense of responsibility that grows into looking after pets or siblings.
- steady walking with a load
- carrying a part-full can without spilling it strengthens balance and concentration together.
What to look for
Watch for them slowing their pour near the top of the pot without being told to.
A tip
Fill the can only a quarter full to begin with. It keeps spills small while they learn the tilt.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: use just one plant and a half-filled can
Harder: add more plants and let them carry the can between stops themselves
