Flour Tray Letters

from 40 months · 10-15 min · Sensory

What you need

  • a tray
  • a few spoonfuls of flour
  • a sheet of paper with the first letter of their name written big

How to do it

  1. Shake a thin layer of flour over the tray and smooth it flat with your hand.
  2. Show your child the first letter of their name on the paper and trace it in the air together.
  3. Let them draw it in the flour with one finger. Give the tray a gentle shake to wipe it clean, and go again.
  4. Try other letters from their name, or draw anything they like.

Why it matters

A finger in flour makes a clear line that's easy to wipe away, so having another go costs nothing.

What they're learning

Letter shapes
Down, across, round: the lines that make their letter.
Finger control
Pressing one finger along a path in the flour.
Having another go
Shaking the tray clean and trying again.

What to look for

Notice them saying the sound of the letter as they draw it.

A tip

Put the tray on a wipe-clean mat or the kitchen floor, and keep the flour thin so the lines show clearly.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: draw the letter in the flour yourself for them to trace over

Harder: write two letters from their name side by side, or the letter their grandparent's name starts with
