Fill to the Line
What you need
- a small plastic jug with water or milk
- a clear plastic cup each
- a sticker for each cup
How to do it
- Stick a sticker halfway up the outside of each cup as the line.
- Ask your child to pour their drink up to the sticker, slowly, and stop when it gets there.
- Talk about it: is the cup full, half full or nearly empty?
- Ask them to pour one for you too, up to your sticker.
Why it matters
A line to pour to gives them a place to stop, and full, half and empty become words for something they can see.
What they're learning
- Pouring with control
- Tipping slowly and stopping on purpose.
- Full and empty
- Full, half and nearly empty, seen through the side of the cup.
- Pouring for others
- Filling a cup for someone else as well as themselves.
What to look for
Notice them slowing the pour down as the drink gets close to the sticker.
A tip
Put just enough in the jug for two cups, and keep a cloth nearby for drips.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: put the sticker near the top, so there's more room to stop
Harder: put the stickers at different heights and ask whose cup will have more
