Fill the Pet Bowl
What you need
- scoop
- pet food
- pet bowl
How to do it
- Fill a scoop with a little pet food.
- Walk together to the pet's bowl.
- Let your toddler tip the scoop into the bowl.
- Watch the pet come eat together.
Why it matters
Feeding a pet builds gentle responsibility and an early sense of caring for another living thing.
What they're learning
- Gentle responsibility
- Being in charge of feeding another creature plants an early sense of 'someone depends on me,' the same instinct behind caring for a doll or a sibling.
- Controlled tipping
- Tipping the scoop just enough to empty it (not fling it) refines the same wrist control used for pouring their own drink.
- Delayed reward
- Waiting to watch the pet actually eat teaches that good things sometimes come a few seconds after the effort, not instantly.
What to look for
Watch for them checking the bowl afterward to see if the pet is eating — that's them connecting their action to the outcome.
A tip
Pre-portion the scoop yourself so it's never more than the pet should get — toddlers will happily 'help' feed a whole bag if you let them keep going.
Make it easier or harder
Easier: you hold the scoop steady while they tip it
Harder: let them carry the scoop from the food bag to the bowl themselves
