Family Bunting: illustration of a toddler doing the activity

Family Bunting

from 36 months · 10-15 min · Fine motor

What you need

  • sheets of paper in two colours
  • child scissors
  • crayons
  • a long strip of masking tape

How to do it

  1. Draw a triangle on each sheet and let your child snip them out, one flag for each person in the family and a few spare.
  2. Let them draw a face on each flag. Who is this one? Add the hair and anything else that makes it look like them.
  3. Lay the flags out on the floor in a colour pattern, red, yellow, red, yellow, and check together that it works all the way along.
  4. Fold the top of each flag over the sticky side of the tape, in order, and hang the bunting low on a wall.

Why it matters

Each flag is someone they know, drawn by their own hand. Keeping the colours swapping means checking every new flag against the last.

What they're learning

Snipping triangles
Straight cuts that meet at a point.
Drawing faces
A circle with eyes, a nose and a mouth.
Keeping a pattern
Red, yellow, red, yellow.

What to look for

Notice them telling you who each face is as they draw it.

A tip

Hang it where they can see it but can't pull it down, and keep the tape clear of light switches and sockets. Sit beside them while the scissors are out and put them away when you finish. Children's safety scissors only.

Make it easier or harder

Easier: use one colour of paper, and you snip while they draw

Harder: when they're not looking, swap two flags so the pattern breaks, and see if they can find it and fix it
